Ready-to-Race Edition

The Tommi Makinen edition was released in 1999, named after Finnish rally driver Tommi Makinen who had won Mitsubishi numerous WRC driver’s championship awards. It featured Red/Black Recaro seats (with the embossed T. Makinen logo), 18” Team Dynamics white wheels, a leather MOMO steering wheel and shift knob, a front upper strut brace lowered with tarmac stages in mind, a quicker lock to lock, and titanium turbine that made for a quick spool up. Notably, the body came in an exclusive shade of red with special decals, replicating Tommi Makinen’s rally car’s colour scheme. This car is also sometimes referred to as an Evo 6¹/².

90’s Rally Icon

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution was completely redesigned in 1996. Built on a new platform, the Lancer Evo IV has continued to build the Lancer’s international reach with a series of victories in the WRC, leading to the Evo 6.

The Evo VI then appeared in January 1999, having retained the improvements introduced on the Evo V, including the widened tracks, leading Mitsubishi to inflate the wheel arches. The modifications seen on the Evo VI are mainly aerodynamic and respond to a change in WRC regulations. Thus, the front bumper adopts smaller fog-lamps and pushed to the ends to widen the central grille. The license plate is in square format and offsets to the right of the grid. The cooling of the motor and of the exchanger is also greatly optimized during the passage. The Cx and lift are enhanced in the front and rear thanks to a new double-blade flap, the top of which is adjustable.

Sure, this machine straight out of a rally special intimidates, with its look of tuned sedan and its sharp lines, it nevertheless imposes respect thanks to its aggressive kit. As a result of intensive reflection, the Lancer Evo is above all an engineer’s car, exhibiting its technicality well before any aesthetic concern.

The Car

This black over Recaro black and red seats embroidered with the Tommi Makinen logo is a Factory LHD car delivered in France and reads 115,000 kilometres on the odometer. The chassis and body panels are entirely rust and accident-free. The original MOMO Steering wheel will come with the car.

The car is in its original Pyrenees Black Pearl paint, which remains in excellent showroom condition with no major imperfections to note.

Exterior

Body – The body is entirely comprised of its original factory panels, all of which are straight and damage free with even panel gaps throughout. The car was a pleasure car for all its owners and remained in a very good body condition.

Paint – Here presented in original factory Pyrenees Black Pearl colour – never resprayed as shown in picture below

Wheels – 18” Team Dynamics White wheels  – same design as the one used in Group A by the WRC team.

Interior

Steering Wheel – The original three branch MOMO steering wheel is included.

Dashboard & Instrumentation – The original dash is in excellent condition, no cracks in plastics. The original instruments are in place and functioning properly including two gauges for oil pressure and temperature and an AVC-R for Turbo pressure.

Seats, Trim & Carpet –Recaro seats with ‘T. Makinen Edition’ stitched into them in excellent condition, door panels, carpeting, headliner, and floor mats are original to the car and fairly clean. There are no tears, rips, stains, or fading.

MECHANICAL

Engine – 2.0L 16V Turbocharged

  • Original Motor: Yes.
  • Engine Number: Available upon request.
  • The Drive: “The TME is no doubt a rally car on the road (this special series came out following Tommi Makinen’s victory at the World Rally Championship). Compared to a classic Evo 6, the box is shorter and the direction much sharper. The front bumper is also specific to increase the flow in the oil cooler. The exchanger and the Turbo are also specific, as well as the AYC. The car is very efficient thanks to the pump AYC and the front axle is much more incisive than my Subaru 2000GT for instance! The car is very well known on Mitsubishi Lancer forums, especially on EvoPassion in France. This is one of the very rare left-hand drive of origin that has been imported and homologated in France. I have the history of the interview of the previous owner.”

Start the engine

Transmission – Five-speed manual transmission.

  • Original Transmission: Yes.
  • Gearbox Number: Available upon request.
  • The Drive: The five-speed gearbox is incredibly sweet and the pedals all react just as you want. It’s all so instinctively right.

Handling – On the cover of the Japanese brochure for the Tommi Makinen Edition were the words ‘Specially Tuned for Tarmac Stage’ and it certainly feels it. The steering is light and seems to twitch the nose of the car into corners almost surprisingly fast at first. But settle with it, expect the initial jink, and the spooky grip it finds just makes you grin.

ORIGINALITY

While being owned by some Mitsubishi and rally cars enthusiasts (Owned previously by the Club Mitsubishi France president), this car has received some mechanical and chassis improvement as well as instrumentation such as the AVC-R and PLX that now allow you to see the temperature and oil pressure and Turbo pressure while driving. That will be appreciated by those who know the model.
