The McLaren F1… That should be enough for a description as this piece of engineering art does not need any introduction, but for those who are not familiar with it here is a little story to celebrate the F1’s 25th anniversary.
The original concept was conceived by Gordon Murray, while the overall design of the car was Peter Stevens work. Murray wanted to create a light supercar with a naturally aspirated engine, which was initially supposed to be supplied by Honda (thanks to the McLaren/Honda collaboration in Formula 1 at the time) and derived from their F1 engine.
For some reason, Honda refused and Murray then approached BMW Motorsport who conceived the S70/2 6.1L V12 powerplant developing 627hp and in 1992, the McLaren F1 was born.
The car features extensive use magnesium, a carbon fibre monocoque and body panels, and a gold foiled engine bay to help heat insulation among many other unique features. Only 106 McLaren F1s were built in different configurations, and until the launch of the Bugatti Veyron, the F1 was the fastest production car in the world with a 240.1mph (386.4 km/h) record!
In 1994, Autocar Magazine stated “The McLaren F1 is the finest driving machine yet built for the public road” and for us, that statement remains true in 2017.
