The 2017 edition of the Targa Florio Classic took place last week and is the pinnacle of historical Motorsport races and one of the most challenging competitions in Europe. This year’s edition is sponsored by Alfa Romeo for the Classic, and Abarth for the Rally. Participants included a 1968 Lancia Fulvia Zagato Competizione, a 1939 Fiat 500 Sport Zanussi, a 1930 OM-665 SSMM Zagato and many more classic legends!
Created in 1906, it takes places in Sicily through mind-blowing village and mountain landscapes. Alessandro Cagno won the first Targa Florio, covering 3 laps (totalling 446km) with a 50 km/h average speed. In the early 70s, the competition got to the next level with 600hp cars such as the Ferrari 512S or the Porsche 908/03 Spyders, blasting through small mountain roads, villages and the Mediterranean coast.
Porsche holds the record for the number of wins (11) closely followed by Alfa Romeo (10) and Ferrari (7). As a tribute, Porsche named their hardtop convertible 911 after the race.
